So What, Exactly, Is
Clinical Neuropsychology

Clinical neuropsychology is the science of understanding how disorders of the brain affect a person’s thinking (cognition), behavior, and emotions.  Neuropsychologists complete evaluations, from brief to lengthy, to determine a person’s strengths and weaknesses in all or some of the following areas:

  • Intellectual abilities
  • Attention, concentration, and processing speed
  • Executive functions (Planning, problem-solving, organization)
  • Language
  • Visuospatial skills
  • Learning and memory
  • Academic skills (Reading, spelling, written expression, math)

By looking at the profile on these tests, a neuropsychologist can help diagnose and understand the impact of neurological disorders such as:

  • Dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease, vascular disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other causes of dementia
  • Stroke (cerebrovascular accident)
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Brain tumors
  • Meningitis
  • Medical conditions that affect the brain

A neuropsychologist can help diagnose and understand the impact of disorders that begin in childhood and that affect the brain (neurodevelopmental disorders).  This is Dr. Mapou’s specialty area.  These disorders include

  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Specific learning disorders that affect reading, spelling, written expression, or math
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, sometimes called ADD)
  • Prematurity
  • Genetic disorders
  • Medical disorders

Some neuropsychologists will also treat people with these disorders.  Although Dr. Mapou does not do treatment, he will always make recommendations for treatment and help his patients find treatment resources.
