Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Mandated Neuropsychological Evaluations

When a candidate for a pilot’s license or an air traffic control position, an active pilot, or an active air traffic controller reports a medical condition that affects the brain or a psychiatric disorder during their aviation medical examination, the FAA requires a neuropsychological evaluation.  The testing that is required depends on the diagnosed disorder.

Dr. Mapou has been completing FAA-mandated evaluations for more than ten years.  He has specialized in evaluating candidates, pilots, and air traffic controllers diagnosed with ADHD, autism, or psychiatric disorders.  However, he also sees individuals diagnosed with neurological conditions.  Dr. Mapou regularly works with a Senior Aviation Medical Examiner, Peter J. Lambrou, M.D., at the Center for Aviation Medicine, in Pittsburgh, PA.  He also receives referrals from other aviation medical examiners and from directly from those seeking an evaluation, based on his listing on the FAA website.

Dr. Mapou has CogScreen-AE and Basic HIMS (Human Intervention Motivation Study) certifications, which are required for these evaluations.  In 2019, he was appointed by the FAA as Special Medical Consultant to the Federal Air Surgeon as a specialist in Neuropsychology.  His work includes reviews of submitted evaluations and providing input to the FAA for development and revision of neuropsychological testing protocols.
